Vampers GIMP drawing guide
First off, will be a guide to general drawing in GIMP. I’m going to draw Midnight, my Dino OC. So start up GIMP and create a new picture. Usually by either going to File->New or by pressing ctrl+N. I usually start with a 400x400. Mine looks like this (It may have a different shape for other people depending on the size)
Now, you will want to start drawing. But, to make things easier, I would make a new layer first. You can make a new layer by going to Layer -> New Layer (red circle), Clicking the small picture of the paper at the bottom of the layers box (blue circle), or pressing Shift->Ctrl->N. If you do not see the layer box, go to windows -> Dockable Dialogs -> Layers. Any help needed will show on the following picture.
Before you start drawing, I would zoom in and start drawing instead of at 100% zoom. To zoom, click the magnifying glass (blue circle) and draw a simple square with it and it will zoom to that area. Another way to zoom is view->zoom (green circle).
Something else I always do is make the brush size 0.20. The [ ] keys on your keyboard make your brush smaller or larger. The \ key (next to the [ ] keys) takes your brush back to the default size of 1.00. You can also type in manually where it says scale (red circle) on the toolbox.
Alright, hard drawers, let’s get drawing. I’m teachin’. (Win 1000 PP on the MWC site if you guess which vampire movie that’s from. NOTE: the words have been changed though XD)
I do not do all of those extra lines like you see on most youtube speed paints. I cannot draw like that digitally. What I ALWAYS do is start with the basic outline, starting at the head. Be sure you have the transparent layer clicked or it will be harder to color (If you do screw up, you can always trace over it on a different layer)
In this drawing, any spikes or in-body designs will not be added yet. JUST the outline. Here is the picture so far.
Great, we have the general outline. Now, what I am going to do is add more details to the outline. Like, make the hands and feet NOT blobs and add some spikes to our raptor friend. Maybe some claws and a few more lines as well. And the eyes. Midnight isn’t blind (XD!)
Now guess what I’m going to say next? What, you don’t know? –Sighs- Guess I’ll hafta tell ya. Make a new layer. And all of our new detail shall go onto that layer. That way, the eraser tool doesn’t mess up our already made outline.
Oh now look what I’ve done. Now her hands and feet look all messy. No worries though. Its easily fixable. Just go to the layer with the original picture, and choose the eraser (blue circle), and erase over it. If you’re confused with the lines, you can hide one of the layers by clicking the eye next to the appropriate layer (red circle). (I might have edited a lil’ bit)
Alright, that’s all the drawing it will take for our wonderful raptor friend. Now we start coloring.
NOTE: Make SURE it is in RGB color mode. Check by going to Image -> Mode
First, you make a new layer, then drag that layer UNDER the layer with the drawing on it. Otherwise, our coloring will overlap our outline and we don’t want that. If you want, on the two layers that have been drawn on, you may merge those layers (right click and press merge down or merge visible layers. If you choose to merge visible, make sure the white layer is NOT visible. Do NOT press flatten image.)
Im going to start with midnight’s MAIN body color which is, you guessed it, Midnight blue. Choose your color by clicking the black square overlapping the white (red circle).
Note: Do NOT use the paint bucket tool UNLESS you decided to use the pencil and not the paint brush. You picture will be fine just dragging your brush across the picture if you are on a different layer. You can make your brush bigger here.
Oh lookie, we haz an uncreative all blue raptor. Let’s just fix that shall we :3 Lets add a few extra colors. Those colors being black, white, and yellow. Create a new layer. This layer should be BELOW the drawing but ABOVE the main body color.
Oh mai starclan, she now has color. But just because I like making you read things, there is still more color to add. This is usually only if your drawing has any special designs. In midnight’s case, she is starry. So on a new layer (above the others but below the drawing), I am going to make her starry. Stars are simple to make if you ever do stars. (I don’t know if any of you have realized, but the midnight cat adoptable I created is BASED off of this raptor here)
Oh lookie, we are almost done! Now, delete the white layer entirely. Why? Because WE want OUR picture’s back ground transparent. Unless you want a white bg. Delete it anyway if you want to draw your own background (that’s another lesson for another day) Now click the layer WITH the drawing on it. Go to Image -> Auto-crop Image.
Now we save it. Now, the default file type for GIMP is .xcf. Now, how you save it is VERY important. If you want to keep your picture recolorable, save it as .xcf. that will keep your layers without saveing it as an animation (also another lesson) Remember, just like photoshop’s .pdf, you cannot upload .xcf files.
After you have saved the template (If you wanted to) Save it as another file type. Note: This WILL merge your layers. I would suggest .png, .jpg, or .gif. And if you don’t want to look through a long list of file types, I would simply type out the extension in your file name (Red circle). (Click select file type by extension if you don’t want to type it out (blue circle))
An optional thing to do would also be to re-size it. Go to image-> Scale image. Type in a new number in either the length box or the width, and it will auto-scale the other.
If you are creating something for MWC, both numbers must be equal to or lower than 150.
Great, we are finished. Now, just upload it to an image hosting site like Photobucket, Tinypic, Imageshack, or misc. others you may know.
